Johann Sebastiani’s exquisite early setting of the St. Matthew Passion (1672)
We close the season with a special Good Friday concert featuring the all-star instrumentalists and singers of the BEMF Chamber & Vocal Ensemble performing the St. Matthew Passion by German Baroque composer Johann Sebastiani. BEMF Artistic Directors Paul O’Dette and Stephen Stubbs lead the beautiful and rarely performed piece from the period between Heinrich Schütz and J. S. Bach, intimately scored for five voices, six strings, and continuo.
Acclaimed tenor and German Baroque specialist James Taylor sings as the Evangelist in his BEMF début. He leads a BEMF Vocal Ensemble which will feature returning BEMF favorites Jason McStoots, tenor, Deborah Reutter-Harrah, mezzo-soprano, and Ian Howell, alto. Also making their BEMF débuts will be John Taylor Ward, tenor, and João Fernandes, bass.
