A Boy Is Born—Festive Music of John Sheppard, Thomas Tallis, and Arvo Pärt

For over four decades, the legendary singers of The Tallis Scholars and director Peter Phillips have earned worldwide acclaim for performances of unparalleled purity and clarity that beautifully illuminate Renaissance polyphony. They return this holiday season for their 40th performance with BEMF in a glorious program featuring Tudor motets by John Sheppard and sublime works of Arvo Pärt. The magnificent centerpiece is the monumental seven-part Christmas mass of the ensemble’s namesake, Thomas Tallis. Based on the festive plainchant “Puer natus est” (A boy is born), the mass is a breathtaking work of unsurpassed beauty.

There will be a free pre-concert talk at 7pm featuring director Peter Phillips and Edward Elwyn Jones, Gund University Organist and Choirmaster, Harvard University.

“Conveying intensity through restraint is what The Tallis Scholars have been doing so wonderfully these past 40 years.”
