JÉRÔME HANTAÏ studied
viola da gamba with Wieland Kuijken at the Royal Conservatory
of Brussels, where he received the first prize in 1984.
He has performed under conductors Jean-Claude Malgoire,
Rene Jacobs, and Sigiswald Kuijken. In high demand
as a soloist, he has presented numerous recitals, performed
the Passions of J. S. Bach, and toured extensively
with duo partner Kaori Uemura, including appearances
in Europe and Asia. Mr. Hantaï founded Trio Hantaï with
his brothers Marc (flute) and Pierre (harpsichord),
with whom he has been performing throughout Europe
and North America for over 30 years. In 2003, Mr. Hantaï founded
Ensemble Jérôme Hantaï, which has
recorded a CD of music by Jenkins on the Naïve
label. Mr. Hantaï is also an accomplished performer
of historic keyboards, particularly the fortepiano,
and has performed to critical acclaim on both the viola
da gamba and keyboard. His recent discography includes
Airs populaires de Beethoven and Trios
avec piano de Joseph Haydn on Astrée-Naïve, and two volumes
of Marin Marais viola da gamba works on Virgin Veritas.
Mr. Hantaï has served on the faculty of the
Conservatoire in Cergy-Pontoise since 1988.
KAORI
UEMURA began her musical studies at the age
of three on the violin, and at the age of twelve took
up the viola da gamba; she now also performs on the
dessus de viole. She studied with Toshinari Ohashi
at Ueno Gakuen in Tokyo and with Wieland Kuijken
at
the Royal Conservatoire de Bruxelles, where she received
the diploma with distinction. Ms. Uemura has performed
in numerous concerts and on multiple recordings in
Europe and Japan, most notably with the Ricercar
Consort, Poème Harmonique, Les Arts Florissants, Les
Talens Lyriques, Cantus Cöln, and the Netherlands
Bach Society. She is also a member of Tokyo Baroque
and director of The Royal Consort in Japan.
Born on the butte of Montmartre in Paris, Freddy
Eichelberger began to play music
at a very early age, studying organ with Odile Bailleux
and harpsichord with Blandine Verlet.
He
decided to pursue music professionally, entering
the Lille Conservatory of Music where he worked with
Jean Boyer and Noëlle Spieth
(regional prize in 1988).
Returning
to Paris, he was a founding member of several music groups,
among the most important of today's French early
music ensembles.
Since
then, improvisation has been an important part of
his musical activity, leading him
to
play with all kinds of musicians, from serpent
and tuba
player
Michel Godard to thegreat Indian singer Kishori Amonkar during an unforgettable
week in Mumbai.
In addition, he was very involved in musical theatre, particularly
with the director-actress-singer Sophie Boulin at the "Péniche
Opéra" in
Paris.
He
is fortunate to have played and taught on five continents,
and has recorded more than 30 discs both solo and in good company.
Currently,
besides a sort of 'homecoming' on his first instrument,
the pipe organ, he
plays mainly with the violinist Odile Edouard,
in duo
or in the
ensemble "Sine
titulo," and "Les Witches," continuing their exploration
of Elisabethan tavern, theatre, and court music.
He
is taking care of a series of monthly concerts at
the Bastille reformed church
in Paris, the goal of which is nothing less than
the performance
of the complete
catalog of J. S. Bach's cantatas, a task which will occupy them
until June 2022...
