COLLEGIUM VOCALE GENT
with guest director Kristian Bezuidenhout, fortepiano

The Haydn Songbook
Founded in 1970 by Philippe Herreweghe, Collegium Vocale Gent was one of the first ensembles to apply the revolutionary ideas of Baroque performance practice to modern vocal interpretation, and their fresh approach led to instant international fame. Under the direction of Kristian Bezuidenhout, eight singers from the ensemble return to the BEMF concert stage with an intriguing program to commemorate the 200th anniversary of Haydn’s death in 2009. These captivating songs, written near the end of the composer’s life in the 1790s, reflect his thoughts on his early years in Vienna, his love life, his relationship with God, and his old age.
| “The Ghent chorus, just 16 strong and with individual voices tellingly discernible within the ensemble, is a musical jewel…a thoroughly modern 21st-century touch.” — The Guardian |
