HESPERION XXI
directed by Jordi Savall, viola da gamba

Music from the Time of Cervantes

Incomparable viola da gambist Jordi Savall has thrilled audiences for decades with his unique programs and inspired performances. His most recent recreation pays homage to Miguel de Cervantes (1547–1616), the great Spanish author whose vivid descriptions of music both ancient and contemporary evoked peace and joy, melancholy and sadness, beauty and passion. Through a program of instrumental dances featuring strings and percussion, the seven remarkable performers of Hespèrion XXI bring us on a European journey inspired by the writings of Spain’s most influential literary figure.

Jordi Savall, Fahmi Alqhai & Sergi Casademunt, viola da gamba;
Xavier Puertas, violone; Arianna Savall, double harp;
Xavier Díaz-Latorre, lute, theorbo & guitar; Pedro Estevan, percussion

“Hespèrion XXI, led by viola da gamba player Jordi Savall, is the sort of vital and engaging early music group that seems destined to win new converts…it was an enchanting evening of passionate and lucid musical time travel.” — The Los Angeles Times
