Elizabeth Kenny, lute

English eccentrics, French fanatics: Cuthbert Hely, the Gaultiers, and Robert Johnson
Emmanuel Church

One of Europe’s leading lute players, Elizabeth Kenny’s playing has been described as “incandescent” (Music and Vision), “radical” (Independent) and “indecently beautiful” (Toronto Post). She returns to BEMF with a solo recital début that showcases some of the seminal lute works of the 17th century, from the graceful melancholy of the French cousins Ennemond and Denis Gaultier, to music from the zenith of the Jacobean era in England by Robert Johnson and Cuthbert Hely.
