Time Stands Still: Music of John Dowland
New England Conservatory's Jordan Hall

Join legendary musicians Dame Emma Kirkby and Paul O’Dette as they celebrate the 450th anniversary of the birth of “The English Orpheus,” John Dowland. Both Kirkby and O’Dette have been renowned interpreters of this great master’s music for decades, and here they join forces on the BEMF concert stage for the very first time, offering a selection from Dowland’s four songbooks and A Musicall Banquet, interspersed with astonishing lute solos. This concert promises to be a journey of rediscovery for all!

Music by John Dowland

From The First book of Songs, 1597
Go crystal tears
All ye whom love or fortune
The King of Denmark, his Galliard (lute solo)
Wilt thou unkind thus reave me
Come heavy sleep

From The Second Booke of Songs, 1600
Lachrimae (lute solo)
I saw my lady weep
Flow my tears
Sorrow stay
Die not before thy day
In darkness let me dwell (from A Musicall Banquet, 1610)

Time’s eldest son

Fancy No. 5 (lute solo)

From The Third and Last Booke of Songs, 1603
Time stands still
Farewell too fair
Weep you no more sad fountains
When Phoebus first did Daphne love

From A Pilgrime’s Solace, 1612
Sweet stay awhile
Shall I strive with words to move
Mignarda (lute solo)
Stay time awhile thy flying
Thou mighty God
Farewell (lute solo)
