The Newberry Consort
Rosa das Rosas:
Cantigas de Santa Maria
For nearly three decades, The Newberry Consort has delighted audiences with ravishingly beautiful programs, and they return to BEMF with one from Medieval Spain. Alfonso X, an ailing 13th century king of Castile, prayed to the Virgin Mary for divine intercession and recovered, whereupon he commissioned songs, or cantigas, praising the Virgin and her miraculous works. The Newberry Consort’s performance— joined by members of Exsultemus in their BEMF début— tells a compelling story that incorporates projected images of the lavish illustrations from the original manuscripts. This multimedia production is not to be missed!
David Douglass, vielle & rebec; Ellen Hargis, soprano; Shira Kammen, harp & vielle; Mark Rimple, lute & citole; Tom Zajac, flute, psaltery, bagpipe, pipe and tabor & percussion; Matthew Dean, tenor & speaker; Exsultemus directed by Shannon Canavin
