Mon, June 27, 7pm View a gallery of production photos BEMF premiered the first of its Chamber Opera Series productions to a packed Jordan Hall in November of 2008, and presented a sold-out encore at the June 2009 Festival. With the operas now a fixture of BEMF’s annual concert series, and the source of recording and touring projects, BEMF is reprising—by popular demand—its November 2009 production of the original 1718 chamber version of Handel’s beloved pastoral opera Acis and Galatea. The story depicts the love between the nymph Galatea and the shepherd Acis. Their happiness is dashed by the monster Polyphemus, who is in love with Galatea, and kills Acis in a jealous rage. As Galatea laments the loss of her lover, she uses her divine powers to transform Acis into an everlasting fountain. Paul O'Dette and Stephen Stubbs, Musical Directors Aaron Sheehan, Acis |
